Stepping into the unique art and culture scene in Salem isn’t hard since it surrounds visitors at practically every turn. From Street Art murals as a part of the Punto Urban Art Museum to celebrating all forms of art at the Salem Arts Festival every June, Salem feels like an artists’ mecca with its welcoming spirit and eclectic nature. 

How Can You Take in Salem’s Art & Culture? 

There is so much to see and do in Salem that it may be a challenge to choose just one area to explore. Here are a few suggestions of how you can tap into the art scene throughout Salem. 

Punto Urban Art Museum 

If you have never seen street art, you won’t want to miss the Punto Urban Art Museum in the Point Neighborhood of Salem. A short walk from downtown will take you to 75 colorful and larger-than-life street murals by 30 world-renowned artists and 25 local artists.

The Punto Urban art installation is outdoors and free to explore at your own pace. It is made to increase pride of place within the neighborhood and raise consciousness about social justice topics. Learn more about each exhibit and where to find them on their site. 

Artists’ Row 

Heading downtown? Check out Artists’ Row, a seasonal program that provides space for artists and artisans in the heart of downtown Salem. 

Located at 24 New Derby Street, across from Old Town Hall and Derby Square, Salem Artists’ Row is a centrally located marketplace with artists’ stalls, a restaurant, and a public restroom in historic downtown Salem. Right in the heart of the city, this marketplace is an artist’s creative space and inspiration. 

Open seasonally from May through November, Artists’ Row offers the opportunity to purchase artistic wares and speak with the artists themselves, often as they work. This unique venue allows the public to interact with new and veteran artists of all mediums and understand their process. 

Salem Arts Association 

Support for the arts and artists themselves can be found at the Salem Arts Association, located at 159 Derby Street. There, you will find a gallery open to the public seasonally from March to December that holds exhibitions, provides life-drawing sessions in the gallery, and hosts art receptions.

The Salem Arts Association also has a gift shop that offers affordable, locally created fine art, crafts, jewelry, photography, and unique gifts. Beyond the gallery and gift shop, the Association aims to build a vibrant community that celebrates the arts in all its forms. 

The Creative Collective 

The Creative Collective is a team of small businesses, creators, artists, entrepreneurs, and leaders who champion a culture of equity and belonging. According to their website, their main focus is on empowering businesses and communities to reach their fullest potential by providing comprehensive business support, marketing and consultancy services. 

A signature event supported by the Creative Collective is the Salem Arts Festival, held every June. This free event is being held this year on June 6, 2025, and will feature a vibrant celebration of local art, music, dance, and theater performances across outdoor stages.
