What is Real Pirates Salem?

Real Pirates Salem is a museum in downtown Salem, Massachusetts, devoted to the real people and history behind the pirate ship Whydah Gally, which sank off Cape Cod in 1717. The exhibit features authentic coins, weapons, and many other objects recovered from the wreck, along with interactive experiences and stories about Captain Samuel “Black Sam” Bellamy and his crew.

Where is Real Pirates Salem Located?

Real Pirates Salem is at 285 Derby Street, Salem, MA 01970, on Charlotte Forten Park near Salem’s historic waterfront. Look for the tall pirate character murals outside the brick building behind Lulu’s Bakery.

Is the treasure at Real Pirates Salem real?

Yes. Our museum displays authentic artifacts recovered from the Whydah shipwreck, including coins, jewelry, and weapons. There is also a designated station where visitors can touch silver pieces-of-eight recovered from the wreck. Please note that these are the only artifacts meant to be touched, and that other artifacts are on display for viewing only, not for touching.

Is there a real pirate ship in the museum?

The museum tells the story of the Whydah through recovered artifacts and a partial replica of the ship. The original vessel sank off Cape Cod in 1717; the museum does not contain the intact original ship, but we do hope you enjoy the interactive stations and immersive set pieces that make you feel like you’ve been transported into the world of pirates.

What can visitors do at Real Pirates Salem?

Visitors can see authentic Whydah pirate artifacts, try interactive stations, touch designated silver pieces-of-eight, explore the Discovery Lab to learn how objects from the wreck are preserved, and take included photo booth pictures. A guided Director’s Tour is also available at an additional cost.

What is the Discovery Lab?

The Discovery Lab is part of the museum experience where visitors learn about the archaeological preservation of centuries-old artifacts recovered from the Whydah wreck. It connects the objects on display with the work required to recover and care for them.

Is there an age restriction for children who are Real Pirates Salem visitors?

Visitors of all ages are welcome!

Is Real Pirates Salem a good activity for kids?

Yes. The museum welcomes visitors of all ages and offers interactive stations, a chance to touch designated authentic coins, and stories about the crew, including the youngest pirate on the crew, 9-year-old John King. Families should allow time to explore at their own pace.

Is Real Pirates Salem about the Salem Witch Trials?

No. The museum focuses on maritime history, the Whydah, and real pirates of the early 1700s. The story we share of Maria Hallett, sometimes called the “Witch of Wellfleet,” is part of Cape Cod folklore and is separate from the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. 

What is the difference between Real Pirates Salem and the Whydah Pirate Museum on Cape Cod?

Although similar, they are separate museums in different locations that both present the story of the Whydah. Real Pirates Salem is at 285 Derby Street in Salem and displays authentic artifacts from the wreck. The Whydah Pirate Museum is in West Yarmouth on Cape Cod. If you are looking for the museum on Cape Cod, please check their individual museum site for current exhibits and tickets.

How long does a visit take?

Plan on one to two hours to explore the exhibit. Visitors who enjoy reading the historical displays or spending extra time with the interactive stations may want to allow the full two hours.

What are the museum hours?

The Museum opens at 10:00 am each day, and the last entrance is at 4:30 pm for a 5:00 pm closing.  On October weekends, with high demand, the museum may stay open slightly later than 5 pm. To be certain, contact Real Pirates Salem or check our hours on Google for the most up-to-date information. Real Pirates Salem guests are welcome to visit the Museum at any time during opening on the date specified on each ticket. We look forward to seeing you at the Museum!

Do I need to arrive at a specific time with my ticket?

Guests may enter at any time during open hours on the date shown on their ticket.

What is included with general admission?

General admission includes the Whydah artifact exhibits, interactive stations, the chance to touch designated silver pieces-of-eight, the Discovery Lab, and two downloadable photo booth moments. 

What is the Director’s Tour?

The Director’s Tour is a personal guided tour of the museum with one of our knowledgeable docents, who will give you the “ins and outs” of the exhibit– including facts that might otherwise pass you by.

Do you offer group booking discounts?

Yes! Real Pirates Salem offers a discount for all bookings in excess of 15 people. Depending on group size, discounted or complimentary passes are also available for motorcoach drivers accompanying your group. Contact Real Pirates Salem Events at (978) 259-1717 for more information.

What is the maximum group size?

Large groups are welcome! We will work with you to sequence larger groups effectively through the exhibit and ensure the most comfortable and informative experience for each participant.

Where can I park?

There are a limited number of public parking spaces in the back of the Real Pirates Salem building at 285 Derby Street. Please note that some spots are strictly crew parking only. If public spots are not available, there is also street parking via meters on Derby Street and its adjoining streets. If you can’t find a spot in the metered spaces along Derby and its adjoining streets, we recommend using the South Harbor Garage (at the corner of Derby & Congress Street). It is approximately one block away from the Museum. This location is also above the Destination Salem headquarters office where you can stop in and pick up other brochures and information about Salem. Allow extra time to park during busy weekends.

Can I take the train?

Yes! The MBTA Commuter Rail’s Newburyport / Rockport Line brings visitors directly to Salem Station, making it a convenient option during Salem’s busiest season. The line adds extended service on October weekends. For more information on train schedules, click here.

Can I take the ferry?

Yes! The Salem Ferry Ride from Boston’s Long Wharf to Salem is between 50 to 60 minutes. Upon arriving from Boston, the Salem Ferry drops you off at the Salem Wharf Ferry Terminal on Blaney Street. In Salem, the ferry terminal is within walking distance of Real Pirates Salem. The Salem Ferry runs seasonally from spring through the Halloween season. Can I visit during Salem’s Halloween season?

Yes. October weekends can be busy, and hours may be extended. Please check Google or call us at (978) 259-1717 for the most up-to-date hours.
