April 10, 2024

Finally, it’s spring! The sun shines longer during the day, the thermometer is on the rise and the flowers are just beginning to bloom. It’s time to get out and explore the communities around you and Salem, Massachusetts is the perfect place to start.

From harbor sails to museum tours and delicious outdoor dining to shopping the many boutiques and shops along the cobblestone streets, Salem has so much to offer. Enjoy a childless romantic weekend getaway or travel with your family to dive into the fascinating maritime and historic past of the Witch City.

Here are some suggestions on how you can spend a weekend in Salem, Massachusetts.

Spring Is Special In Salem

Most people would think about visiting Salem during the full month of Haunted Happenings events. But what you may not realize is that Salem is just as exciting and robust in its tourism attractions during the other months of the year.

Spring is an especially alluring time to visit as the historical and maritime landmarks are open without the crowds that are typical during October. Spring shows Salem in a new light and allows for other aspects of the community to shine.

Decide on Accommodations

To start your mini vacation in Salem, decide on what type of accommodations you want whether it is an Airbnb, hotel, B&B or a historical inn.

Historical hotels such as the Hawthorne Hotel are always a great choice but there are also other options all in the heart of the city where you can find shops and restaurants within walking distance. We also love the Salem Waterfront Hotel on Derby Street, the Hampton Inn of Salem on Dodge Street and the Hotel Salem on Essex Street just to name a few.

If you desire more intimate lodging options such as an inn or B&B, you may want to try the Daniels House on Daniels Street, The Merchant on Washington Street or the Coach House on Lafayette Street.

Ask about amenities and extras that are often available in boutique inns and hotels. You will love the optional breakfasts and activities that many offer.

Enjoy International Cuisine

Foodies adore Salem for its wide array of cuisine offerings from traditional American fare to Asian, Mexican, Thai, Italian, Mediterranean, and Greek options. Choose from casual dining to fine dining or, if the weather cooperates, dine outdoors at one of the many outdoor cafes that line the downtown streets of Salem. It is an experience all of its own that you won’t want to miss.

To explore a full listing of Salem dining establishments and to choose what cuisine style you want for your weekend away, we suggest exploring Destination Salem’s restaurant listing section.

House of Seven Gables

Explore Local Literary & Historic Contributions of Salem

Salem is filled with maritime history and stories from the infamous Witch Trials of 1692. If you enjoy learning more about these events and Salem’s role in history, we suggest you explore one of the many museums such as The Witch Museum, Real Pirates Salem, Salem Maritime History Museum or The Daniels House

If you enjoy literature, make sure you make time to visit the House of Seven Gables. This home was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 2007 and is most well known as the setting of world-renowned American author Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1851 novel.

While in Salem, take a tour either by foot along the Salem Heritage Trail, by trolley on the Salem Trolley Tours or by sailing vessel out into Salem Harbor and along the sound. These tours are informative, fun and always a great way to spend a day learning about the history of the Witch City.
